At Rock Bridge High School, there are two concert bands that rehearse consecutively on ‘R’ days beginning immediately after marching season (after the first weekend in November). Band members will have the opportunity to audition for either the Symphonic Band (intermediate ensemble) or Wind Ensemble (advanced ensemble) in mid-October. Last spring the Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. Thalhuber, earned “Straight 1’s” at District Contest. The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Mathews, also received “Straight 1’s” with some extremely complimentary remarks about the band’s performance.
This coming year, the band plans to continue its tradition of performing at home concerts and District Contest. An added performance opportunity will be a concert competition in Hawaii during the 08 Spring Break. Students from both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will combine their efforts into one group at the Hawaii Invitational in Honolulu. This will be a great opportunity for Rock Bridge students to travel and perform with bands from all over the country.
Last year, a new tradition started with having one senior student from each band perform a featured solo piece accompanied by their respective ensemble. Trumpeter Lindsay Hobbs from Symphonic Band and trumpeter Danny Cook from Wind Ensemble were the first Rock Bridge band students to win the band’s First Annual Concerto Competition. This newly established tradition will again happen this coming year.
Both bands perform the highest quality of wind band literature and are beginning to make many positive impressions from directors at the high school and collegiate levels. The 07-08 school year promises to continue in musical growth and an even greater challenge with more advanced literature.
