RBHS has a strong tradition in musical theatre! The precedent, laid down by former director, Bob Bohon, has continued on and is recognized by many across the city of Columbia and mid-Missouri area. Each fall, the entire Fine Arts Department collaborates to stage a Broadway-style musical over three nights in November. Auditions for this production take place in late September and rehearsals take place in the evenings on weeknights through the run of the show. Recent productions have included: Fiddler on the Roof, Disney's Beauty & the Beast, Once Upon a Mattress, Barnum, Curtains!, Seussical the Musical and Urinetown, and The Drowsy Chaperone.
The Musical Theatre class at RBHS is open to students in all grades and features beginning and advanced levels of study. A comprehensive skill building curriculum focuses on developing vocal technique, knowledge of stage direction/geography, general acting/improv experiences, basic choreography study/practice, auditioning and musical theatre history. The culminating event of the second semester is a Theatrical Showcase that combines the class with the Advanced Acting class in a show that features performances from 10 different plays and musicals.
